IRA and travel by air

me and a blue wall
Perhaps I'm a little late to the discussion of this, as I haven't had time to keep up on people's blogs lately, but did you hear about this? After May 1, half the airlines I know of are going to start charging for checking a second bag. That means I'm screwed at Christmas, when I often go home for over a week (large bag) and take presents and nearly the kitchen sink with me (another large bag). I had joked about this day coming, but I'm still a little surprised it is. This is only going to make me less likely to travel by plane. Which means less likely to travel, period, because I ain't driving anywhere either. Trains, perhaps? Bah. Guess I'll ship presents by mail when I go home for Christmas this year.

Wherefore art thou, high speed rail?*

In other news, in the first week of May I'll be down in Atlanta for the International Reading Association annual conference. I really like this conference. I went for the first time last year when it was held in Toronto. I never need to take a whole lot with me for trade shows--unless we've forgotten something, but then we usually FedEx big boxes of stuff to the show floor--but I always end up bringing a suitcase full of books home with me. But not if I have to pay $25 for it.

*Well, that would only help me with about half the country. Seattle to Atlanta, for example, not so much.

I just bought a new "airline regulated" carry-on. I will pack to fit the suitcase and weight regulations, which means you may see me wearing the same clothes every day! Anything I pick up at IRA I ship back.

See you in Atlanta!

Exactly what I thought. That, and I'm flying to Arkansas for a writing conference in June; I'm not the most light traveler, and I hoped to have copies of BDC to take with me too! Boooo to the airlines!

I can't wait to meet you!

When I took a nine-day trip to Boston a few weeks ago, my bag weighed 53.5 lbs. but they didn't charge me. My husband flew to Boston the day before on the same airline and got charged for an oversized bag. I must have a nicer smile.

Or it could just be the difference in the brightness/fastidiousness of the attendant on duty. I've had multiple people not even bother to look at the scale before picking up my suitcase.

The USPS is your friend
Stacy,

Not only can you ship your presents, but if you travel heavy, try this. The next time you go to a convention, ship your luggage to your hotel ahead of your arrival. Check with your hotel to see how they want it, but all hotels will receive mail and packages for registered guests, even ones that haven't checked in yet. when you arrive, they'll send it up to your room.

UPS is good for this, as is FedEx, but the USPS is the best for cost.

Re: The USPS is your friend
Generally at conventions I only need the one suitcase going. I guess I'm going to have to start taking advantage of the shipping on the way back from conventions, rather than relying on the suitcase.

Still, this bit-by-bit eroding of what so-called "services" come with flying (are they going to stop losing luggage if they start charging for it??) irks me.
